I've been using auctioneer for about 2 months, I upgraded to 3.8 about two weeks ago and the everything has been great. Last night when I logged into WOW I was greeted with this error line.
WTF\account\(accountname)\savedvariables\auctioneer.lua:65198: invalid contol char near 'char(0)'

This was followed by a pop up box that required a database conversion for auctioneer and warned me to backup my data first. I backed up and converted and all my data is gone (I still have the backup). Each time I install the backed up data I run through the process again. 1. error message 2. conversion 3. no data again. I've tried uninstall and reinstalls with no luck. Any ideas?

It also looks like the data for other addon's (lootlink) have been reset as well. I am not sure what caused it, I am hoping I can figure out a way to get my old data to work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

it sounds like your data file is corrupted. how big is it? open it up in notepad or your editor of choice, and let us know how what the end looks like.

typically this can happen when there is an error or power loss or forced process exit while WoW is exiting. Did you recently have the game hang while quitting?

Unfortunately, if I am right, there is no way to fix it. This is why we suggest you make (frequent) backups of your data.

Dinesh, there might be a way to fix it if the *.lua.bak file in his SavedVariables folder is just a little bit older (and a little bit smaller) than the corrupted file (but knowing Wizzards backup scheme I guess you are right)

Btw Dinesh is right about the regular backups. Make at least once a week a backup of your SavedVariables\Auctioneer.lua file (schedule it) (or even better your SavedVariables folder (since that will save more than alone the Auctioneer file if the worst case imaginable happens)).

Looks like you guys are right on, I did have WoW freeze on me earlier last night. I looked at the format of the current info and the format of my backup info and the backup info just quits somewhere along the line. If I were to snag a friends auctioneer.lua file (from the same server) and change the character names at the beginning of the file would I be able to use that info? If not, i'll just start over and backup daily. Thanks for the help.

Ok, since I was planning to do this anyway (but did not need it till now ), I have created a batch file you can put in your windows-scheduler so it copies the file on the background.

You need to edit the batchfile!!!! (since you have probably a different drive and location and certainly a different account). Thus change:
<drive:> into the drive on which you have World of Warcraft installed (for me it is N:)
<Program Files> into the folder you have installed it on (for me Games)
<account> into your account (for me.... Yeah you would like to know wouldn\'t you :shades:)

Ok I could not attach the batch-file, so I post its contents:
    if exist "<drive:>\<Program Files>\World of Warcraft\WTF\Backup\SavedVariables\" rd /s/q "<drive:>\<Program Files>\World of Warcraft\WTF\Backup\SavedVariables\"
    XCopy /y "<drive:>\<Program Files>\World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\<account>\SavedVariables\*.bak" "<drive:>\<Program Files>\World of Warcraft\WTF\Backup\SavedVariables\*.bak"
    XCopy /y "<drive:>\<Program Files>\World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\<account>\SavedVariables\*.lua" "<drive:>\<Program Files>\World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\<account>\SavedVariables\*.bak"

As you can see it is a double backup, so you always have your previous backup as well.

Now save this batch file to backupWTF.bat in your World of Warcraft folder and schedule it using windows scheduler (I advice at least once a week).

I don't even think you would need to change anything in the file, since the data is stored by server-faction, not by character, but I confess to not being 100% sure about this. EIther way, yes, you should be able to.

The only drawback of this batch-file is that it copies the *.lua files to *.bak files iso *.lua.bak. This happens also when I change the *.bak at the end of line 3 to *.lua.bak.

Since there was no difference I wanted to clarify that the result is a *.bak file and thus changed the result-extension in line 3 to *.bak (took me an hour before I figured out why it did not update the *.lua.bak files but that iso it added a *.bak file (where I kept expecting a *.lua.bak file). (Deep under water windows XP is still MSDos, with its naming restrictions <sigh> )).
This also happens when I use copy iso xcopy, but since xcopy is most of the times a bit more flexible than copy I decided to use xcopy.

Btw should we move the discussion about my batch-file (+ the batch-file) to someother topic (since it is offtopic for this topic and can be useful? (Maybe even move it to the wiki-page?)

I had the same issue when I started up Auctioneer for the first time after a new install. I answered yes to the question. Well, as I stated in other post I can't scan the auctions. Then I saw this post and deleted the .lua file. (forgot the specific name) Well, when Auctioneer started up it once again said it needed to convert the file. I clicked yes again and that didn't fix it. Based on the timing I wonder if the problem was introduced with some server side change that Blizzard made on Tuesday/
  1.
If you deleted your SavedVariables file, then there's really nothing else we can suggest to you. Assuming of course that you re-installed Auctioneer from scratch.

Ok I also had a pop-up box with a warning that database conversion is needed. This happened after almost everybody on the EU-Thunderhorn server was kicked back to the char-selection screen twice. (Ok it happened a lot later, but I did a /auc load in Ungoro a few hours after that same char was kicked 2 times (not been to AH in the mean-time), since I wanted to know some Auctioneer-prices).

(Luckily I backed up my auctioneer-file yesterday)

I try to attach the latest auctioneer-file here and put my backup back up to be sure (I do not see anything strange in the ending of the file).

/*edit*/ damn 83 Kb to large after 7zip, gonna post it in 2 posts

    And here they are
/* edit */ I get the following message: \"The file you attempted to upload (Auctioneer.7z.001) was of type \"application/octet-stream\", but the file extension \"001\" did not match the accepted extensions for this type of file: rar, RAR\" for both files. Try to rename them to *.001.7z and *.002.7z

/*edit*/ does not work. Ok I'm gonna give in and rename the files to *.7z.00x.this is not a.rar ;-)>

/*edit*/ worked almost (but renamed both files to auctioneer.rar, so you only saw 1. Gonna rename them now to * 7z 00x this is not a.rar

/*edit*/ and that worked. :boogie: So MP, remember their real extension is *.7z.001 and *.7z.002

Bad news for the orignal poster, good news for me ;-). I think I have by accident moved my account folder one folder up when I answered another post.
This since I discovered that I had a <wow>/WTF/Account/<myaccount> folder and a <wow>/WTF/<myaccount> folder. The latter contained all data for all my chars, the first only for the char I was playing with when I got the conversion-warning.
After putting the latter <myaccount> folder back the problem was gone.

    Sorry for the original poster.
