    Just a question. Nothing more.
My wife took a look at my balances and declared that she is embarrased to tell her guildmates how much I have. I dont think its that much but she thinks it is. So...

    Reality check time!

If you dont mind, what is your current balance right now? Some people may have cash spread over several toons so what is your basic net worth?

about 7000g. plus a guildie owes me 2 or 3k more. he is a RL friend, so i don't so much care.

for a long time, up until TBC, I had by far the most of anyone in my guild, and probably more than all but a handful of folks on my server. at it's peak, it was probably around 12k, which was a lot in the pre-BC days.

one of my guildmates now has about 40 or 50k, made almost entirely from prospecting and JC'ing. she doesn't use auctioneer at all.

many of my guildmates have to occasionally ask for loans so that they can repair mid-raid. it's quite a dynamic. :)

I have about 10k now. It's only very recent though, up until the last few weeks I was spending faster that I was earning...

A little over 44k. I'd probably be close to 50k by now, but I haven't played the AH much at all in the last 3 weeks. Nearly all of it is from using Auctioneer, save from making a few Stabilized Eternium Scopes.

god i feel so poor. i only have 2k. :(
  1.
Okay. Feelin a bit better. Looks like everyone here has "as much as they need or want"...;)

As of this AM, I was worth 47, 639 according to "Big Picture"...( a lot of resources spread over several toons)

I also made my guild 5000 gold in four weeks after dedicating a toon to the sole purpose of making money for my guild. We buy our last guild tab today. ;)

Ive got about 18k in gold and another 12k in inventory.

@rodgort - how long has it taken you to amass that amount? I keep finding ways to spend 2k like a new epic pattern for an off-spec.

Eh, I've played the AH on and off for a bit over two years. I've given away and spent an awful lot over that span. Between alts and friends, I must have paid for 10-20 epic flying mounts at this point. So net AH profit is probably closer to 300k, or somewhere in that neighborhood. When I'm being aggressive, I'd guess I profit around 400-500g per day on average. But I don't always play with the depth of time investment that kind of return requires. I've also stopped playing both factions - it just got to be too much work.

When you say aggressively, how much time do you put into it? I figure I make anywhere between 100-400 a day depending on price fluctuations in the enchant mat market. I spend about 15 minutes scanning and bidding, prob about that DEing everything I buy and relisting is easy with the batch post options. With the search UI I've added back items for resale but that doesn't take a lot of time, probably just another 5 minutes to make sure I don't have poisoned data.

To go back to the point of this post, I started playing the AH as soon as I got to org as a level 10 or whatever. Was able to buy the epic mount and have spent a lot of money on crafting mats for upgrades, power leveling leatherworking and enchanting as well. Id say to go along with my 30k in value right now, Ive spent at least another 20k on recipes, mats, and other less reputable wares (arena points). Probably more. It's also fun having money to buy presents for guildies, the 300g JC pattern or something is a nice surprise for people.

My secret is the enchanting materials market. It's low risk, low time commitment, and I don't have to pay that much attention to trends and patterns.

It all depends on the server market, of course. I think that I have mine set to 20-30% markup, 1g50s minimum I think. Most of what I have been DEing lately have been the Shattered Sun Supplies loot items. I'm on Cho'gall, which is horde heavy, so I've got about 50 pages of armor and 16 pages of weapons I page through 2-3 times a day. I scan in the morning before work... evening when I get home as I decompress from the work day. And then sometimes again at night. I bid on items <12 hours and of course buyout.

For me: disenchanting. Get to 225 skill at least. 50% discount, 50s min profit (less min profit when getting started, of course).
Higher skill == higher profit. But keep DE'ing the small items to balance your inventory (you don't want all arcane dust).

I can make 500g a day on a high population server. Also, I've seen a pattern that alliance seems to underprice their greens more than horde.
On a less populated server (where my main resides, sigh), maybe closer to 100g a day.

For me, having an inventory of Arcane Dust isn't a problem right now. I was listing stacks of 4, but I got sick of waiting for them all to post so I changed to stacks of 20 one day. I sold the 20s before the 4s and I haven't looked back. I can list around 10-15 stacks of 20 each day and sell out no problem. There are several people on my server doing this so prices are about 20g per stack, but enchanting mats are a volume business at the high end.

Lately, the best money makers are the Eternal Essences and the Nether Essences. Fewer people running the lower level zones and since I decided to rep up Cenarion Circle, I got some good money off DEing those greens.

The problem comes when I have 80 stacks of arcane dust and can't sell more than 20 a day.

Yep. There's a limit to how much money you can make doing any one thing.

Which is good. It's means lots of people focus on slightly different markets and there's space for more than 1 person making money on any one server.
  3.
I actually run two toons. The first is my main who own the big cash and the second is an auction toon for the guild I belong to. I divide the AH between them. The guild toon gets the lower levels and keeps herself at 150 enchanting. My toon gets the rest. So far my guild toon is making around 1000 a week, which has been used to buy tabs and will soon go to funding repairs for runners. My other one makes less, but puts in roughly ten minutes a day.

Most of the big cash is just patience and willingness to save a mild rate.

I reached 50k a few weeks ago but bought an epic flyer and a handful of other expensive items for an alt so it dropped down to 45k which is where it has been hovering for a while.

In a timespan of about four months, I've made slightly over 40k, mainly thanks to WoWecon's pricing evaluation and some very lucrative prospecting that I did when ore was cheap. It has since rocketed to levels at which it is no longer worth prospecting.

My level 18 mage got about 4k gold right now :)

Yeah, he has not leveled much the past week. I am leveling in a "group" and have to wait for the others to finish some real-life business. While I wait I have been playing around with BtmScan, and look he can now afford every mount up to his regular flying mount at 18 :O

I don't DE much just because it takes too long. I go for minimum-effort profits. I scan the entire AH, buying mostly blues and patterns - anything that is undervalued by at least 30% or so, has low deposits, and will profit me at least a few gold per listing. Then I relist them. Takes maybe 15 minutes a day. It's not rocket science. You need some intuition about values and shifts in the markets, though, or you'll end up with a bank full of items whose prices are diving. I can't tell you how to avoid that, just that I do.

I follow pretty much the same plan as rodgort, scan the entire AH, buy cheap epics, blues, shards, and patterns. I just put them back up for sale at the "normal" sell price, and put them back up again when they don't sell. I usually have around 300 auctions up at any given time. The thing to remember is that you are making money off people's impatience, you buy cheap from those too impatient to wait to sell at fair value, and sell to those who don't want to wait for a cheaper price. I've done this off and on for the past 18 months or so, and have accumulated 140K. I have spent a fairly large sum too, buying a total of four epic fliers and twinking lowbie toons for myself and family members.
Another thing that has worked for me is exploiting price variances between the factions. For example, there is a constant 10g difference in what Void Crystals sell for on the Horde side vs Alliance. I have bought and transferred (using the cross-faction AH in BB) several hundred VCs and sold them at that profit. I transferred the profit back to the Alliance buying playing cards, transferring them the same way, and reselling on the Alliance side. If you have a trusted friend, and do it quickly, you can transfer the stuff through the AH in BB for a few copper, thus avoiding the 15% AH cut on high sale values.
To the point of your wife being embarrassed about the amount of gold you have, I spread this activity out over a number of AH toons to avoid some of the "goldfarmer" comments. When I'm asked (frequently) how much gold I have, I generally say a couple thousand, which isn't all that much any more. With the advent of so many dailies, I have seen huge inflation on my server, particularly related to twink blues and shards.
