Bug [5.6.4330]: attempt to compare string with number
  • MongooseMongoose June 2009
Happens every now and then in the appraiser window. Maybe related to clicking on items with random enchantments.

where did you get this addon at?

if you were to disable all the other addon and run just auctioneer do you still get the error?
  • MongooseMongoose June 2009
    1) I wrote FixedPriceAdjust. Never had any problems with it. Besides, it is not in the stacktrace.

    2) Don't feel like disabling all addons and waiting for another bug to pop up.
    a) 10:1 this has nothing to do with other addons.
    b) it is not easily reproducable, so i have to run with just auctioneer for quite awhile.
    c) there is a detailed stacktrace in that report. Someone should look at that first.
    d) got more errors in ScrollSheet.lua, so my hunch is hasty programming and insufficient testing.

hmm blaming people for bad programming and taking no steps in which to help troubleshoot the problem will result in no help. ill wait for others to help you as im not gonna.

    Mongoose,

What you list are the reasons for having the beta, especially for issues that are, as you note, "not easily reproducable".

Although we do appreciate the error report, discerning the specific cause is part and parcel of the beta testing and if you are not comfortable helping with such testing, the Release version has no such issues.

    Happy Sales,

Hehe. I see this as win-win situation. I like Auctioneer a lot, and want to use all the latest features. I accept that working with beta or alpha versions may screw things up, and if it gets out of hand I can indeed go back to a release versions. I am not a dedicated tester, so I am not going to put a lot of time into testing. But I can give you the bugs I stumble upon.

And Matt, as for 'blaming' people; I am a seasoned programmer, I have managed senior programmers for years and I am *completely* comfortable with using light terms like 'hasty' and 'insufficient'. So should you. This is not about blame, it is about being professional and flushing out the mistakes as soon as possible with the least bit of effort.

From my very hasty glimpse, it seems to be an error getting kicked when we're trying to sort the list of competition in the appraiser frame. I haven't figured out much more than that yet.

edit: Mongoose--Have you reordered any of the columns in the Appraiser competition window?

further edit: It also looks like BeanCounter's cache may be wrong, and could be passing bad data to ScrollSheet.lua

That, unfortunately, is all the time I have for looking into it at the moment, though.

    Mongoose,

With such seasoning, it is sad that you apply such terms arbitrarily. Since the beta is part of the testing phase, claiming that a product is untested really does not make sense. As to any sort of hastiness, if anything we are overly cautious with releases.

Regardless, with more testing and input, we will attempt to track down the issue and will correct it, when our volunteers have the time to do so. Keep an eye out for further betas and the change log via http://Fisheye.Norganna.Org for when the issue is addressed.

    Happy Sales,

Don't think so. Resized probably, reordered probably not.

It also looks like BeanCounter's cache may be wrong, and could be passing bad data to ScrollSheet.lua.

Beancounter is definitely having problems. I am seeing large gaps in sales data, not just the occasional misses from not reading mail.
I hate to wipe the slate clean though. I have hunderds and hundreds of items for sale with prices sometimes far away from the going averages.

I know this is all done by volunteers, but like it or not, you have an insane amount of customers. This has gone far beyond any hobby project. So being onboard the Auctioneer team brings a lot of responsibility. On the bright side, it will probably look very good on your resume. It also means that any mistake slipping through can make a million(!) people very unhappy. So I expect that every programmer/tester/manager tries to live up to professional standards, volunteer or not. That means spending a lot of time on design, documentation, internal consultation and testing. Skipping on any of these items - however boring some of them are - will influence a huge amount of people. And in my book "beta" means "passed all internal testing, it should be error-free, but we like you to try it out first anyway". If I suddenly see an unusual amount of errors from the same lua source doing everyday actions I have every reason to use terms as hastily and insufficient.

But let us leave it at that. I will give more errors when I encounter them, and I will try not to step on any more toes.

Slight correction: We have few, if any customers. We have many, many users.
  • MongooseMongoose June 2009
Of course. Customers would be paying :).

you are right here. we have millions of users and maybe a dozen or so people on the auctioneer team, and maybe 4-5 of them are active devs so having the million of users test the product seems a far more viable options to me rather then having a dozen people try to test every options, configuration, addons compatibiltiy out there.

ok guys, i'm glad that we're all friends again, but rather than rehash a discussion we've had a billion times before, let's just leave it at that and stick to the issue raised and possible solutions, please. thanks.
