$800 a month server costs? You're doing something wrong.
  • refractionrefraction June 2010
Hi there, i saw your post on the gathereraddon news about the server costing $800 a month and donations only covering $300 of that.

Im sorry but if it is costing you that much you need re-evaluate where your servers are.. I have a dedicated server (core 2 duo based, linux, root access etc) for pcsx2.net, which gets over 20,000 unique visitors a day, downloading, chatting, browsing the forums etc. This server costs me, wait for it, $120 a month! which makes it hard for me to see why yours is costing so much...

One of 2 scenarios is happening here.

    1. You're lying to use to try and get more money from the users.
    or
    2. You are being severely ripped off by your provider and you need to think about moving servers.

    Refraction,

With three dedicated servers in different geographic regions, the costs, which were bargains at the time, simply are not, any longer.

As norgs quite clearly indicated, they *are* being consolidated, which will bring down costs and administrative load, considerably.

We have always been "straight" with the folks who benefit from our offerings and expect the same. With over four years of that two-way honesty and trust, there is obviously no reason to begin lying about anything now.

    Happy Gatherering,

    Nikk :shades:

Thanks for the reply, apologies if i seemed to come off rude, i was merely shocked by the price given! little did i know this was set up years ago over 3 servers, i guess back then it was needed.

if you're in the UK, im with fasthosts and the deals on the servers are pretty good, might be worth a look if you guys are able to use it :)

I didnt see where norg said about the consolidation, only that he/she was planning on doing something about the price, but im glad you guys are on top of this, i'm a fond user of your plugins and i'd hate to see you dissapear off the face of the earth :)

    Good luck

Yes, I'm in Australia, but the servers are in the USA.

It's usually around $760-ish a month. Sometimes more, sometimes less depending on if we go over on bandwidth or not.

4 servers, 2 of which were highly specced 2 years ago when we did the last upgrade, plus 3-4Tb of data a month over the 4 servers. During major patches, this pushes up to about 5-6Tb.

I don't imagine I'd need to provide proof of how much it's costing based on the fact that 4 * $200 is around $800, but if you're genuinely interested, here's the latest invoice that I just paid today.

As a general rule, I don't like to lie, and I still don't think that we're paying *way* too much for the servers, but the consolidation will probably save us a little off the cost, I'll need to buy 2 very new and very powerful servers (around $5-6k worth) and rack them at a co-location facility which will cost around $600/month. I'll be saving around $200 a month, but also have some very sweet bandwidth which should stop the overage charges.

    Norganna,

I've been using Auctioneer for more than a year. Like everyone else, here, I love it. Although, I have seldom visited your site. However, I did yesterday, saw the post referred to, above, and have become a donator, too.

Refraction was bold to make his point, and you've responded, most effectively. Kudos to you, both.

My only concern is that you might be jeopardizing your operations' security/privacy by posting the invoice with nothing blacked out.

I'm in no need of a response. 'Just wanted to suggest caution...

    Thank you, so much!

"During major patches, this pushes up to about 5-6Tb."

Cache your files using the Coral CDN to offset some of your bandwidth. It's free and reliable. Add .nyud.net to the end of any URL.
    http://www.coralcdn.org/

Since this is an open source project you could also use http://sourceforge.net to host your files.

A long time ago, we used to be hosted at sf.net. However, their reliability back then was less than stellar and we grew tired of not having access to CVS when we needed it the most among other issues so we moved here. As for the CDN, its a good idea, but we then loose the ability to track downloads.

Not to mention (and this is not representative of the point of view of the Norganna team as a whole) that CDNs are a horrible, terrible hack and a hijacking of DNS for uses that were never intended when DNS was created.

IMO, they should be avoided, period.
