We are actively looking for more Developers, Usability Designers, Technical Writers and QA Engineers for many of our projects.

We're a reasonably large open-source project that is growing all the time. We have our own server farm and we treat our team with respect regardless of your level of ability or time constraints, letting you determine your own pace, supporting you with any questions you have or help you need, only providing a very light hand in development direction (which we're always willing to discuss.)

If you're currently in the job market, working on an open source project does actually look pretty good on your resume as well. It gives you real world experience working in teams, working with modern project management tools and it gives you something to talk about at your job interview!

If you're interested, please talk to an op in the IRC channel if you're reading this and are thinking about working on a large-scale opensource project!

Heh, I tried getting on to irc using the java applet, but I can't connect. I assume it's because work has firewalled irc. I was hoping the java applet would get around that, but apparently not.
Anyway... I do have a few things I want to do at the moment. I'm currently spending more time on the AH than actually playing in any other way, so if I can improve my own efficiency by doing some coding then I'll probably gain time in the long run...
I'm a python coder at work though I've done some lua before.
For a while I was maintaining OneHitWonder and BuyPoisons after their original owners dropped them.

Kinesia, when you get home should be fine, we're pretty much a 24/7 operation. Somebody will be online to talk to you :)

Strangely enough, we actually need QA Engineers as much as we need Developers, so just because you can't code, doesn't mean that you can't do anything useful.

A good QA Engineer may not have any clue about code, but be able to verify that bugs exist, narrow down test cases where the specific issues occur, manage the issues on Jira and communicate with users who are having the problems to help identify what's going on.

Most importantly though, a QA Engineer's job involves verifying that the coder has actually fixed the issue when they said they did. It's not that we're lying, more like we think we know everything and we actually don't (which always comes as a big surprise to us.)

It can also be a good stepping stone if you would like to learn the code, but don't want to or are wary of jumping right in.

Currently the number of QA people are outnumbered by the Developers so bringing in a whole heap of new programmers without the QA staff to keep them under control would be a bad idea ('cause us devs get a bit excitable at times!)

Aaaaand, even if you can't code, and hate testing, we need people to do Technical Writing and/or Usability Design as well.

The Technical Writing involves writing up documentation for the website, asking questions how things work, what things do and working out what to say in the in game help (and where the in game help should go), you don't actually have to do it; you just need to draw up a plan that says: Make this say that, Put a help button there, Make the pop up tooltip for that say this, Add this to the help window, etc.

The Usability Designing kinda ties into the Technical Writing, except you can also say this item needs to say something in a tooltip, or this should be moved to another location to make it more obvious. Being a expert in UI design usually requires that you have some kind of qualification or prior experience, but we're willing to accept somebody who's willing to learn. If this area interests you, we'd like to talk to you regardless of experience as long as you're enthused.

Neither the Technical Writer or Usability Designer positions require you to have any coding experience whatsoever, and such would likely be considered a hindrance more than a benefit (programmers are usually pretty bad at this kind of thing). The less you know about coding the better in my book, but I'm willing to talk about that too.

Well, I'm a developer (mostly C++ and C) who is married to a QA engineer (mostly Java) and we both play WoW and use Gatherer. I want to learn LUA, so I'm willing to help and to try to coerce her into helping :-)

What would work best for us is clear specifications and to work at our own pace. We have kids and are fairly busy. Fortunately she can test my stuff so we have a pretty good chance of producing pretty stable code before anyone else sees it.

Like the poster above, the IRC channel seems to be blocked for me at work, but I will try to check in when I get home.

The amusing thing about IRC being blocked is that (if I bring my laptop in) I can actually run wow and do my auction scans still...

I've put some alternate links to IRC up on the IRC page. These ones should work through your firewalls.

I have been using your mod for years now and I've had experience in programming and would like to give it a try on this open source project.

However I'm not quite sure where to begin, any tips to take a crash course in LUA coding? I'm familiar with C, C++, Java, several web languages like PHP, ASP and a strong grasp of database design. I'm currently a college student so I got some free time but I would feel better if I become more familiar with the language and your documentation to go full ahead on this. I also do quite a bit of technical writing and make minor tweaks to the mods I do download for my personal use but nothing on this scale.

In short, the positions of Developers, Usability Designers, Technical Writers and QA Engineers -- I've had experience of some kind in most of them with the attitude of doing what needs to be done.

I got started with the API and lua information on WoWWiki. It's not complete, but as any programmer knows, no documentation ever is :)

I've noticed that the wiki offers no information regarding the PR Officer position, is this something you're still looking to get people into? I'm a communications student (PR track) who is also taking a minor in Entertainment Arts and Engineering (game design/development and very light coding in AS3 and C++). Is there a home for someone who wants to be involved but has never done testing before? Where can I read more about how a person new to this can become informed and make a contribution?

I've been made a QA Engineer, but feel pretty lost still, where can I learn more? (Still interested in PR as well)

    Folks,
I've recently started poking around with Auctioneer, trying to get a feel for the data that it is
collecting and how it fits together. A first interesting element is the counts of the categories
present for a recent ScanData file:

    count category
    1744 "Cloth",
    1297 "Enchanting",
    1260 "Leather",
    1059 "Metal & Stone",
    640 "Quest",
    582 "Herb",
    566 "Mail",
    522 "Miscellaneous",
    496 "Elemental",
    458 "Potion",
    328 "Food & Drink",
    323 "Other",
    320 "Elixir",
    314 "Meat",
    272 "Simple",
    256 "Plate",
    197 "Cooking",
    189 "Parts",
    150 "Bag",
    138 "Purple",

before I go off and write a lua csv data generator, I'd like to ask if anyone
has already done this? My desire is to start loading this data into a MySQL
database on a continuing basis to start doing some tracking.

My bona fides are over a decade of working with various DBs (Oracle, MySQL,
Informix, PostgreSQL, Sybase, SQL Server. Previous job I was responsible for
over 100 MySQL instances holding over 8 TB of blog search data (Technorati).

I was wondering if y'all were still looking for help? I am new to WOW but love the addons and would like to help out, and also add a couple of ticks to the resume.

I'm familiar with C, C++, VB, and getting into C#.net. I've been doing a lot of database stuff recently so very familiar with SQL including designing databases, writing queries, stored procedures, and creating a user interface for the databases either Excel, ASP, or Windows program. I've also got a lot of Excel experience with VBA and data connections to create advanced spreadsheets using external data. QA related, I'm the one responsible for new releases of our third party propietery software at work, so I've written test plans, test cases, and done full release(bug hunting), feature testing, and managed change requests. I've also written more then on IRC bots back in the "good ole days" if that's something you'd want to add or expand on the IRC channel.

I can probably participate quickly in QA or Usability with a slight ramp up time before any development. Technical writing is definitely not a strong point for me, I always farm that out on my other projects ;)

Shoot me an email and let me know if you can make use of me,

    Thanks,

    Travis

Krager, please read http://norganna.org/wiki/Organizational_Chart and determine that you fit the bill for the spot for which you are applying. Once that is done, join #Norganna-Dev on IRC (freenode) and give your forum name to one of the ops in that channel.
  • Hi,

Logged onto IRC - having trouble chatting to anyone; I'm assuming that as I'm an Aussie, all the US folk are in bed. If I'm interested in volunteering as a tech writer, who can I chat to?
  • dineshdinesh May 2008
    PR Manager
many of our devs are aussies, and others european, so someone is usually around. just ping the folks who are channel mods, and hang around for a bit - it can take a while for someone to get back to you, depending on time of day, who's around, etc.

    Thanks for volunteering!
